My Suitcase’s Adventure, Pittsburg, PA.

As I mentioned in previous posts, last year I had the opportunity to work for a company in the United States. I experienced a lot of good things, but the most important undoubtedly was the opportunity to travel and get to know wonderful people. Something that wasn't in my plans for the 2012.

"My Suitcase's Adventure" is the first post of a few, about my trips around the United States.

Our first stop takes us to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This city is not only famous for its sports teams such as The Pittsburgh Steelers and The Pittsburgh Pirates, is also the city that gave birth to the great exponent of "Pop Art", Andy Warhol.

The Warhol is located in downtown Pittsburg, it is the largest museum dedicated to a single artist in the world, and its doors were opened in 1994. Besides being the largest, is also the youngest on the list of the 4 museums who belong to the "Carnegie", named like this after its founder Andrew Carnegie.

The Warhol is composed by 7 floors, and on each of them we can see different facets of the artist, as well exhibitions of other artists. Each floor is dedicated to a different theme, including paintings, drawings, his personal collections, sculptures and an area in which you can view his videos and movies featuring famous people, among many others by the gorgeous Edie Sedgwick. Finally you can't leave without visiting the cafe and the gift shop, which is a little bit expensive, but really worth it tho.

So if you are close to the city, or want to plan a trip, I highly recommend Pittsburg because it has many things to do and visit. And if you want to know a little more about Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick I recommend the movie Factory Girl, which shows their fabulous and decadent life.

P.S. Sorry for the bad pics, but as you know all the museums have a lot of security and all the photos were captured on the sly.

Productos Grrr!

Usually I spend my sundays resting and relaxing, but sometimes I like to take long walks and see new things. This time I decided to visit a long time friend.
Her name is Maki, she lives in Monterrey N.L. She loves to travel, the good music and cats, but also she is the owner and creator of the brand "Productos Grrr".
Something that started as a hobby, is one of the most wanted brands in El Corredor del Arte, located in the well known Barrio Antiguo in downtown Monterrey.
The thing that distinguishes the brand is the beautiful and fashion accessories some of them made with recycle materials like rings, necklaces, collars, bows, purses, bags, etc. I consider myself a fan of the brand for years and I talk very seriously ... you're gonna love it.
Maki also makes music! She has a musical project called "PacoPedacitos", besides she is the drummer in the band "Uvilov".

Today we want to talk about a trend that is slowly filling the streets, and also one of our favorites of the season: The Metallic Fashion Trend. This trend has been around since last winter and the good thing is that we don't see only the typical metallic colors like silver, gold and bronze; now we can find pieces in many colors, combinations and textures.

The great thing is that it gives to our outfit a stylish and chic touch without exaggeration, or an excellent option to go party. A plus for us is that these clothes and colors are made to capitalize our style in any occasion. Another point on its favor is that we have left behind the belief that the sequins and the metallics are to be used only at night, and now is very common to see people in the daylight wearing studs and sequins on shoes, accessories and clothing.

So stop being unnoticed and opt to use some metallic pieces, and whenever you least expect, you'll have many of them in your closet, because this trend is becoming an essential look for us from head to toe.

Before I start, my name is Carolina Avalos, communicologist by profession, who loves everything that has to do with communications (except the weather forecast). I like everything that expresses something, especially music, art, fashion and I have a true passion for photography. Even though I like to write, I consider myself very visual and sometimes that could be a problem because I add more pictures than text (forgive me if I get carried away).

I spent several days in the search of what to write about and at the end I decided to start with clothes, yes I mean who doesn't think about clothes? Sure, because we never, ever, ever have something to wear!! And is this "need" of purchase what makes us look everywhere to find the perfect boots, or that bag that matches with my dress, or that blouse that finally you can wear with the skirt that you have never used, among many other cases, we always think twice before we buy something.

Thanks to all the options that we have in these days, most of the people don't stay with their arms crossed to see that there is nothing at the mall or simply nothing worth to pay, but fortunately we have Internet and thrift shops or vintage, Yes! Thrift shops and the best of all is that most of these shops sell everything online.

When we hear the word "Vintage", the first thing we might think about is polka dots dresses, oversize t-shirts and retro bags, just to mention a few things. This elements of our wardrobe have become a "must have" in the recent seasons, because not only they have a unique style, but also they are very nice and usually a bargain!

One of my favorite online stores is La Percha, with whom I worked and also belongs to one of my best friends. La Percha was officially established in 2010 in Monterrey and its goal is to have the best selection of vintage clothes, and certainly you will never leave empty handed.

La Percha, not only sells online, they also organize collective sales and festivals in different parts of the city, along with art exhibitions, music and fashion. It’s a brand that doesn’t stop and always keeps working in different things.

Leatherette jackets, dresses, bags, friendly people, good music, art and be prepared to be spoiled with food and desserts because that's part of the essence of La Percha, and thanks to that I have met many good and talented people.

So please go through their site, and don't miss their track Percha, because they are always working in different things and events.

Gracias por leernos!

¡LUCHAS, LUCHAS!

I know you may think, why is interesting to talk about “La Lucha Libre” when it is already a well known topic in Mexico?, but to answer that question first I have to talk a little bit about me.

I am currently a marketing intern at an American company located in Hillsborough, North Carolina. During the months I've been living here I've met many interesting people, but this past weekend 4 friends from the company gave me a worthy spectacle that I never thought to be able to see so far from Mexico.

"Luchadoras" as they call themselves, are a group of women based in the city of Durham, North Carolina who practice nonprofit Mexican style wrestling. Each”luchadora” hides a story behind its name, La Granada, Kid Vega, Seoul Crusher, La Abandonada are some of the names of these heroines that were chosen according their past, their ideals and in most of the cases, the reason why they began to fight. Here is the story of La Vengadora de Plata:

“There was once a young girl named Georgina from the village of Taxco in Mexico. Taxco produced the finest silver in Mexico and her family the most beautiful and sought after jewelry. One day, while Georgina was out picking fruit, a band of thieves came to Taxco to steal all of their silver. The thieves threatened her family and neighbors with death if they did not turn over all their silver, money, and jewelry. When the villagers refused, the thieves began to burn the village down, but when she got there, it was too late. Georgina vowed to stop the thieves responsible. She took up a luchadora mask and a new identity: La Vengadora de Plata. La Vengadora de Plata fights for her family, for justice, and for revenge.”

When the doors opened at noon on Saturday all the atmosphere (like the taco trucks, the beer and the popular Mexican music) made me feel like if I was in a Mexican wrestling arena. It was a total of 5 fights, a championship fight (the first edition) and many laughs, stunts, jumps and kicks that turned what could have been a quiet Saturday on a day that I'm sure will be remember when we go back home.

Another important thing to mention is that 100% of the proceeds collected went to the benefit of two organizations that support Hispanic immigrants: NC DREAM Youth and Poder Juvenil Campesino, who with people’s donations help undocumented youth, and also aim to create awareness of the broader struggle for social justice.

If you want to know more about the Luchadoras and the pro-immigrant organizations you can visit their pages by clicking on the words in bold. It is never too late to appreciate and learn more about our culture and traditions, which often we don’t realize they exist beyond borders.

Thanks for reading us!

Los Ángeles Regresan: Victoria Secret Fashion Show 2012

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
